Conferences

Following the International Symposia on Recent Advances in Otitis Media, a research conference was convened with panels of experts who prepared reports on the state of knowledge in their respective fields of expertise during the previous 4 years since the last International Symposium on Recent Advances on Otitis Media, as well as future short- and long-term goals. These Conferences were supported in part by grants from the National Institute of Neurological, Communication Disorders and Stroke (NINCDS), the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders of the National Institutes of Health (NIDCD), the Deafness Research Foundation (DRF), Dow Chemical Company, Eli Lilly, Daiichi Pharmaceutical, and the House Ear Institute. These reports were subsequently published.5-14

Extraordinary International Symposium on Recent Advances in Otitis Media

Since all of these Symposia were convened in the United States, the international community of otitis media investigators organized the first Extraordinary International Symposium on Recent Advances in Otitis Media with Effusion, which was held in Kyoto, Japan, in 1985. This Symposium was specifically planned to be two years between the 3rd and 4th Symposia in the United States, which is the interval between Symposia held in the United States for all future Extraordinary Symposia. The Symposium Directors were Tadami Kumazawa and Kazutomo Kawamoto. There have been five subsequent International Symposia. Proceedings were published (Table 2). The 7th Extraordinary International Symposium on Recent Advances in Otitis Media will be held in Stockholm, Sweden on June 12-16, 2013. Sten Hellstrom, MD, PhD, is the President and Malou Hultcrantz, MD, PhD, is the Vice President (Table 2).
